Street
Youth Ministries
Seattle
is known for its homeless people and in particular, its
homeless youth. Though many consider these kids to be
trouble-makers rebeling against their family, many of
them are not on the streets by choice.
Street
Youth Ministries (a ministry of United Presbyterian
Church) provides overnight shelter and a drop-in center
with food and basic necessities like hygiene supplies.
Just as important, volunteers help serve as a support
system for these children who have no where else to turn.
Executive
Director Shelly Smith reports that the "holidays
were truly an amazing experience for us. Because of donations
we received throughout the season, all of our young men
at Denny Place transitional housing received stockings
and gifts under the Christmas tree! It is remarkable to
see how having a safe place to sleep each night, a place
where you can be certain of being respected can create
an environment for healing and growth."
You
can help by working with SYM directly or through Seattle
Community Church. Seattle Community Church is always taking
collections for hygiene products, money, meals, or anything
that you can spare to help these children. And of course,
your prayers for these kids are always needed. If you'd
like more information, you can contact Ellen Yoon.
