Our Guiding Ideas

Welcome | Worship | Witness

With a vision for a new ministry in the greater Seattle area, Seattle Community Church held its first worship service in October 1998. Since then, we've grown and changed and we continue to give thanks for God's leadership. Our ministry is blessed with people of different cultures, ethnicities, backgrounds and gifts. We celebrate this diversity, because our lives are enriched by the beauty of God's people. When we began dreaming of this church all of those years ago, we knew we wanted a vision that would be steadfast through the years. We wanted to make sure that no matter how many crazy ideas we tried that we we always came back to our foundation and stayed true to the call God was placing in our hearts.

This is our vision:

It is our vision to welcome people into fellowship with Jesus Christ and his community. Through worship and nurturing, people will be equipped to be a faithful witness in daily living and the ministry of Jesus Christ in the church and out to the world.

To this day, these are the things that matter here at SCC. When you walk in the door, we want you to experience a warm welcome - our home is your home. We hope that through worship and the community of people around you, that you will encounter God and experience growth and healing in your life; that when you walk out of these doors, you are empowered and excited to change the world, or at least try to make a difference in our small corner of it.

Our Purpose

We exist to do three things:

Love the Lord with all our hearts (Matthew 22:37-40)
Love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-40)
Share the Good News with people all over the world (Matthew 28:19-20)

As part of the Presbyterian Church USA, these fundamental ideals shape every choice we make, every new challenge we embrace. Whenever we find ourselves wondering what to do, we check back in with these three principles to make sure we are on the right track.

With this as our purpose for living, even on the days that are a little tough, we always know that we are doing something that is bigger than any one of us individually.

The Bottom Line

There are three things that we really value here at SCC

The first is an openness to all those who are seeking the Lord (Matthew 18:5). You won’t find a bunch of hoops to jump through or any test to pass before you come through our doors. If you are interested in learning more about Christianity, are coming back from a long break from church, or have been attending worship service every Sunday for the last decade, there is a place for you here.

Second, we are committed to creativity in ministry (Isaiah 43:19). If you have a new idea, a better idea, or even a crazy idea, we want to hear it! Our pastors and staff know that they aren’t the only people with ideas and they welcome everyone's thought and input.

Finally, here at SCC we deeply value a willingness to change, grow, and serve (2 Timothy 3:16-17). Faith isn’t static - it requires us to constantly take risks and learn new ideas. We hope you will take a risk with us.
